Ruth is a Swedish British cellist and Music for Health practitioner living and working in Stockholm/Sörmlands. As a freelance cellist, Ruth plays with several of the Swedish orchestras, is a member of a string quartet, and is contracted for many of the independent stand alone projects in Stockholm, as well as being passionate about developing her own projects. Throughout her career Ruth has trained and works with a specialised practice of music-making in health settings such as special schools, care homes and hospitals, in both Sweden and the UK. As an orchestral musician Ruth has played under the direction of conductors such as Kurt Masur, Olaf Henzold, Eva Ollikainen, Petri Sakari, Christian Zacharias and many more. She is a founding member of the c/o chamber orchestra, who are a chamber orchestra that rehearse and perform without conductor. She has also played regularly with the Läckö Opera Orchestra, (2013, 2015 and 2016) who perform an opera production for a month every summer at Läckö Castle. She has recorded Pettersson's Symphony No.5 with Norrköpings Symfoniorkester and is a substitute player for several other Swedish orchestras, including Västerås Sinfonietta and the Nordiska Kammarorkester. Ruth has worked as a substitute player for Folkoperan's productions of "Salieri vs Mozart", " Don Quijote" by Massenet and “Skapelse” by Haydn, as well as for Opera på Skäret's production of Verdi's “Don Carlo”.
Ruth's string quartet that other quartet was formed in 2014. In the summer of 2016 they toured Sweden with their concert program "Klirrande isbitar och saft" and in the summer of 2017 they toured with their program "Love notes". They are often engaged for recording sessions, as well as providing music for events and weddings. They have a collaboration with DJ Catrine Forsman and have performed in Umeå with her. In 2018, they toured with their side project for violin, cello and soprano: "Svindlande Höjder". Their program “Love Notes” is currently a part of Region Stockholms catalogue of cultural experiences/performances, available for booking for healthcare centres and wards in the region.
Ruth currently holds a part-time position as cello teacher at Kungsholmen kulturskolan in Stockholm. She has been teaching students of all levels, aged 6+ to adult since 2008 and has held posts with Manchester, Cheshire and St Helens Music Services in the UK, as well more recently in Värmdö kulturskolan and Upplands-Väsby kulturskolan in Sweden. Ruth has also worked as a chamber music coach for Pro Corda, UK.
Ruth studied the cello with Emma Ferrand at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK. She graduated (BMus 2:1) in 2008, and completed her Masters (MMus) one year later, in 2009. During her studies at the RNCM, Ruth received prizes and awards for chamber music with the Mather String Quartet including the RNCM Sir John Barbirolli/Lawrence Turner Prize for String Quartet in July 2007, as well as being highly commended in the Granada, Schubert and Terence Weil Prizes. After gaining a place at the orchestral academy in Göteborg in 2011 (a collaboration between the University of Göteborg and the Göteborgs Symfoniker) she completed a Masters in Orchestral Studies in 2013. During her studies in Göteborg she received awards from the KMA Stipendium, Göteborgs Frimurares musik och sång-stipendium as well as the Adlerbertska Stipendium.
